Synopsis of Experiment

Surface electrodes are placed on the skin above the belly of the biceps brachii muscle to record surface EMG (sEMG). Amplitude and frequency of spikes (motor unit action potentials) are measured from sEMGs and used to compare motor unit activation.

Experiment 1: Comparison Of Motor Unit Activation During Concentric And Eccentric Isotonic Contractions

The amplitude and frequency of sEMG spikes will be measured when the muscle is at rest (muscle tone) and during flexion and extension against a muscle load of 5 pounds.

Experiment 2: Recruitment During Isometric Contractions

The amplitude and frequency of sEMG spikes will be measured while the muscle maintains the arm at a 90° angle with increasing muscle loads.

Variables

Now determine the dependent, independent, and controlled variables for each experiment in this laboratory activity by clicking on the appropriate answers.

Check your answers until you have chosen all variables correctly. There will be one choice for Dependent and Independent Variables and multiple choices for Controlled Variables. When you are done, click the Submit button to save your responses to the laboratory report.
